Traditional Islamic paper from North India made from sunn hemp fibre. Handmade on a chapri, a grass stem screen. Sheets are dried on a plaster wall and surface sized with wheat starch. The colour is applied by brush. Madder comes from the root of the rubia plant, an ancient dye from India, and the source of the pigment rose madder. After colouring the paper is burnished by rubbing on a curved block of wood with a smooth stone. Vegan.
This paper is made for calligraphy and fine brush and pen work. In India it is used by the Jain community for hand written geneologies written in gold.
